What evidence do I need to prove my Orem company-car crash was work-related?

It depends - and your boss saying "just use your own insurance" does not decide it in Utah.

If you were driving as part of the job, the best proof is paper and electronic records showing the trip benefited your employer. In an Orem crash on I-15, University Parkway, or State Street over Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, or Thanksgiving, save the dispatch, text, email, work order, delivery sheet, GPS route, timesheet, and mileage log. If you were heading to a site, supplier, customer, or training, that usually matters more than whose name is on the insurance card.

If the employer gave you a company truck or van, get photos of the vehicle number, tools, materials, uniforms, and any job paperwork inside. A police report from Orem Police Department or Utah Highway Patrol helps, but it is not enough by itself. Officers often record where the crash happened, not why you were on the road for work.

If the company claims you were "just commuting," you need evidence that this was not a normal drive to or from work. Strong proof includes:

  • you were traveling between job sites
  • you were sent on a special errand
  • you were carrying employer equipment
  • you were on the clock, using a company gas card, or following a supervisor's directions

For Utah workers' comp, report the injury to your employer promptly and no later than 180 days. Ask whether the employer filed the First Report of Injury with its carrier and the Utah Labor Commission. Delay gives them room to argue the crash was personal, especially during holiday-weekend traffic when they try to blame congestion or a drunk driver instead of the work assignment.

Also keep your medical records consistent. Tell every provider you were injured while performing job duties in a company vehicle, not just "in a car accident." That wording can make or break the claim.
